Bishop Viard College is the Catholic Secondary School which serves Tawa, Porirua and the Kapiti Coast. It is a microcosm of multicultural Aotearoa/New Zealand giving witness to the truth that all people are equal before God. Bishop Viard College is an integrated co-educational Catholic school providing a learning environment for Years 7 - 13 students. As part of the Catholic faith community encompassing the parishes of Elsdon, Plimmerton, Porirua, Tawa and Titahi Bay, Bishop Viard reflects the community view that its young people should be educated in a particular and special environment.
Special in what way?The College is a place where there is a commitment to ensuring that the youth entrusted to the College's care have the opportunity to grow to their full Christian potential. Our school community desires to cultivate openness to truth, to others, to God. It wishes to be a community in which people are treated as ends and not as means. We strive to have here a place in which the dignity, rationality, and freedom of the students are respected, a place in which students find opportunity to realise that dignity and exercise that freedom, and learn to allow the same dignity and the same freedom to others.
HistoryFounded by Cardinal Peter McKeefry and established in 1968 by the Assumptionist Fathers and the Brigidine Sisters, Bishop Viard College has been innovative from the outset. Its initial fame came from the originality and the concept of its design. As a co-institutional establishment, educating boys and girls on the same site, it was the first step towards co-education in a Catholic college in New Zealand. In educating students from Form 1 to Form 7 it was unusual in bringing to the urban environment a type of school most commonly found in rural areas. In 1975, Viard became a single co-educational college. Innovative, exciting and unusual when it was founded, Bishop Viard College made a difference then and continues to make a difference today.
